If you only go to Cancun (famous city of Mexico) for its endless parties on the beach or its luxury hotels, it is better to review your vacation program. Because Cancun has much more to offer than its white sand beaches. It is indeed the ideal starting point for discovering the magnificent region of Yucatan, which is home to some of the oldest ruins of the Mayan people. Land and sea adventures, ecological parks and local Tequila tasting, here’s what to see and do in Cancun.
Things to absolutely do or see during your visit!
Stop at Chichen Itza
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is also the second most visited site in Mexico. You will discover the full extent of the constructions and heritage of the Maya, in particular their magnificent temples and pyramids, as imposing as they are majestic. This maze of ruins also has many surprises in store for you, with numerous arenas which hosted the sporting events that the Mayans were fond of.
Don’t forget to stop at the Temple of the Warriors as well as the Group of a Thousand Columns, which are also worth the detour. Before leaving, and to refresh your thoughts, it is advisable to stop at the cenotes, these sacred wells ideal for diving.
Delve into the cenotes
Cenotes (again) are indeed a significant part of the Mayan heritage. These underground chasms allow you to explore the beauty of its 100% natural aquatic formations, a sort of ideal window onto the extremely rich marine life of this part of Mexico. Diving, or simple dip, it is also the ideal place to refresh yourself.
Among the most popular cenotes, you can stop at Ik-Kil (just a few kilometers from Chichén Itzá), known as much for its transparent water as its waterfalls. Also stop at Gran Conoto and Sac Aktum, where you can observe turtles in their natural habitats and take a dip.
Rediscover tequila
The Tequila Sensory Museum is a must for lovers of this typically Mexican alcohol, where you can discover its different stages of production, but also taste it without breaking the bank. Preferably come there by taxi, because it’s a safe bet that you won’t be able to get behind the wheel again after your visit!
Visit Isla Mujeres (or Women’s Island in Spanish)
Isla Mujeres is just a 20-minute ferry ride from the city of Cancun. It is the ideal place to enjoy the magnificent beaches of the region while avoiding the flow of tourists from the city. You can even rent a golf cart or moped to tour the island (which is only 7 km).
If you have a little time on your hands, take the opportunity to stop at the turtle sanctuary or rent a kayak instead to hope to encounter dolphins. It is also the ideal place to discover local specialties, or taste a local beer.
Party at Coco Bongo
It’s impossible to leave Cancun without partying at least once at the city’s most famous club, Coco Bongo. You can both ignite the dance floor until the early hours of the morning and attend non-stop shows (like that of the caterpillars or the famous Mexican impersonators, for those who have a better command of Spanish). The lively and deliciously retro atmosphere of this famous club will allow you to taste Mexican nightlife while avoiding the tourist attractions that lack authenticity in the center of Cancun.
